Compression is trimming down a file in size by encoding its information. This is done so that the information can be stored or transported more efficiently. Binary file compression is a special kind of compression. Either way, the final result is resulting to a lesser file size. The size of the information in compressed shape comparative to its original size is known as the compression ratio. Ratios differ depending on the algorithm utilised and depending on the original file.

Compression programs are specifically made to compress and decompress files. When compressed, files can not be utilised until they are decompressed again. Hence, compression is positive for archival or for emailing.

ZIP and RAR are known instances of compression schemes for data. Binaries though must have all start-up capabilities hence requiring proper binary compression programs.

The act of compressing a binary (executable) file is frequently named as packing, a typical name for an executable compressing program then becomes a packer. Most packed executables uncompress directly in memory and require no outside file system space to initiate.. To the everyday user, compressed and not compressed executables are identical.

Packers also have another ground of existence: executable compression is used to obfuscate, to disguise strings and to modify signatures. Nevertheless, this does not eliminate the chance of reverse engineering. In general, executable compression is entirely insufficient to outwit cracking. The protectors are lots more reliable for that purpose.

Speed is not a main reason in favor of or against compressing an executable. That is explicable because a compressed program is smaller, hence taking less time to map into memory. On the other hand, it requires some time to decompress the data before execution begins which levels the total.

Compression is done by using compression algorithms that rearrange and reorganise data information aiming at a more streamlined storage. The same applies also for binary files with repeated bits and bytes. There can be media such as images whose data information occupies more place than required. Yet, the document or file can be compressed to shrink this inefficiency electronically.

Compression can be achieved in two ways: lossless and lossy compression. Lossy compression does not permit replication of a perfect copy of the original but provides a better compression ratio in return. If decompression makes an exact reproduction of the original information, then the compression is lossless.

JPG and compressed sound are systems where there is actually missing as much as 90% of the original information. Still, the fundamental data remains present because the primary colours respectively the main sounds are held intact. This lossy compression gets rid of bits of data that - hopefully - are not required.

Lossless compression reduces file sizes without loss of information, also when decompressed. To achieve this, algorithms make reference points for patterns, store them in a table and place the table with the now tighter encoded file. When decompressed, the file is re-generated by replacing the referenced points with the original information.

Data and executable compression for 32 bit or for 64 bit are comparable on both platforms. In fact, anything that is stated in general is also right for 64 bit software. The same application created in 32 bit is usually slightly smaller than its 64 bit counterpart. However, there is frequently a better ratio for the 64 bit program compression because there are more alike patterns in this software (only the same number of basic bits and bytes exist for both). As a result, it is yet more advisable to compress 64 bit software.
